Development Approval
QAL operates in accordance with a Development Approval (DA) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. An Annual Return is submitted which reports on compliance with DA conditions and general environmental performance. This information, together with the DA, is freely available to the public. Interested persons or groups can obtain the information from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Integrated Environmental Management System
Operations at QAL are conducted under an Integrated Environmental Management System, which is a system of checks and balances ensuring continual improvement. QAL has been certified to the international standard ISO 14001 since 1999 and has maintained its third party certification via triennial audits and 6-monthly surveillance audits of the system.
Who is Responsible?
The responsibility of environmental management lies with each operating section. The Environmental Group provides guidance, advice on environmental legislation, environmental compliance testing, auditing and planning.
Other Requirements
QAL is
both a large refinery and energy consumer, with major sections of
the refinery purpose-built to recycle energy. QAL seeks to improve its value to owners and reduce its impact on
the environment through an active program of energy use reduction
including improvements to operating and maintenance practices and
significant capital projects.
QAL has also been a voluntary member of the Federal Government’s Greenhouse Challenge Plus Program since 1996. In 2005, the refinery participated in trialling measures to be introduced as part of the Federal Government’s Energy Efficiencies Opportunities program.
