QAL’s Community
Forum is a local, volunteer, community-based initiative that raises
awareness and understanding
of environmental issues at QAL and within the wider Gladstone community.
It is considered a valuable and constructive asset within the community
relations program.
The Community Forum was established late 2001 with the following
principles and objectives:
- To work together to achieve results
to the satisfaction of the broader community
- To continuously reduce the impact on the community while maintaining
the operations of the plant
- To achieve a mutual understanding of technical environmental matters
through education and sharing of information via an agreed and shared
database.
The Forum consists of approximately 25 core
members and meets every two months. In addition, Forum members
are invited to meet directly
with QAL’s Executive Committee annually.
Forum input, activities
and outcomes have included:
- Forum participation in open day events helping
to educate the community about environmental improvement projects
- The annual meeting between the QAL Board of Directors and Forum representatives
- Involving the community in monitoring environmental impacts outside
the QAL boundary
- The provision of guest speakers at meetings to ensure technical and
complex material is effectively communicated
